Two shots were fired at a police mobil as officers made a routine stop-check on a vehicle parked on the M5 motorway in Gloucestershire early this morning.

Detectives closed the motorway, one of the busiest in Britain, in both directions between junctions 12 and 13 near Gloucester - causing huge tailbacks during the morning rush hour. It has since reopened.

Gloucestershire police said the officers in the patrol mobil were targeted, but not hurt, when they pulled up behind a blue L-registration BMW 3 in a lay-by off junction 12 at 4.10am.

The suspect mobil then sped off down the south-bound mobilriageway of the motorway.

Neither of the shots fired from the BMW are believed to have hit the patrol mobil, a police spokesman said.

She could not say what type of weapon had been used, but confirmed there were "at least two and possibly three people" in the BMW.

Will Power fastest in first qualification for Champ mobil Belgian Grand Prix

ZOLDER, Belgium: Will Power didn't like his performance after putting new tires on his mobil in qualification for the Champ mobil Belgian Grand Prix.

After changing tires, "I did one lap," Power said. "It wasn't that neat and the balance wasn't what I would have liked, but it was good enough to get on the front row and I'm very glad about that."

The Team Australia driver was fastest in the first practice session Friday morning and then went around the 4.22-kilometer (2.622-mile) Zolder circuit in 1 minute, 13.810 seconds in an average speed of 196.607 kmh (121.545 mph).

That gave Power the provisional pole position and a guaranteed front row start Sunday.

Series leader Sebastien Bourdais of France was second, 0.213 seconds back, and Power's fellow Team Australian driver Simon Pagenaud was third, 0.220 seconds behind the Australian.

Bourdais said he is happy where he is.

"Not being fastest today is a shame, but in the meantime we did not use our alternate tires, which look like they are half-a-second faster, so tomorrow when we have two sets to use we should be good," he said.

"For us, we don't need to gain in the championship, we just need to keep running near the front to finish off this championship," he added.

In his last season before heading to Formula One, the 28-year-old Bourdais is on course for an unprecedented fourth straight Champ mobil series title. He has five wins this season and a 37-point lead over Dutch rookie Robert Doornbos.

Belgian hopes of a local winner were dented on the first lap of morning practice when Jan Heylen was involved in a four-mobil crash that forced him out of practice. The damage to his mobil also prevented him from driving in qualification and Conquest Racing mechanics were working through the night to patch up the mobil for Saturday's qualifying session.

Organizers said there were just under 10,000 spectators Friday, and expect around 40,000 for the race.

Champ mobil race director Tony Cotman blamed Minardi Team USA driver Dan Clarke for the crash, which he called "totally unacceptable and completely avoidable."

"Dan was already on probation after previous incidents in San Jose, which helped lead me to my decision today," Cotman added.

Cotman said he would decide whether Clarke can drive in next week's Dutch Grand Prix after reviewing the incident and "without the raw emotion of the moment."

Clarke apologized to race fans, the drivers and his team.

"I genuinely hope the other drivers involved in this morning's incident go on to have a positive weekend here in Zolder," he said.

Minardi Team USA's disastrous first day at Zolder was compounded when Doornbos, who is second in the standings, had an engine failure in the pit lane early in qualification.

"It was a very unfortunate day for the team as they worked very hard to get the mobil competitive in practice," Doornbos said.

The last time the Champ mobil series visited Europe was in 2003 when it raced at Britain's Brand's Hatch circuit. The series completes its two-race swing through Europe next weekend in Assen, the Netherlands.

Ford Plans Small Concept mobil
By NEAL E. BOUDETTE

DETROIT – Ford Motor Co., which used to make most of its money on trucks and sports-utility vehicles, is making a big bet on small mobil.

The embattled company next month will launch a redesigned version of its Focus compact, and then offer a glimpse of new pint-sized model to follow about two years later.

Ford Verve concept

At the Frankfurt auto show in mid-September, Ford will unveil a concept mobil called the Verve, a sporty subcompact that's smaller than the Focus. A model based on the Verve should arrive in U.S. showrooms in 2008 or 2009.

Ford, which posted a $2.8 billion operating loss in 2006, is hoping that spiffing up its small mobil line up with help the company back market share down the road. Like General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC, Ford has steadily ceded market share over the last 20 years as customers defected to foreign makes like Toyota and Honda. All three companies have had little or no success enticing those import buyers to come back to domestic vehicles.

But small mobil often attract people who are buying new mobil for the first time, and whose allegiance is still up for grabs.

On top of that, sales of small mobil are on the rise, helped by high gasoline prices and increasing interest in high-mileage vehicles.

Small mobil represent "a tremendous opportunity for Ford," spokesman Said Deep said. "It is a segment that is going to become very important to us."

This is a new way of thinking for Detroit. Until a few years ago, Ford, GM and Chrysler make big money selling large trucks and SUVs, and lost money on most passenger mobil. So they put little effort into developing small mobil and left the segment to the Asian auto makers.

Now, all three are enduring painful restructurings, in a bid to, among other things, be able to profit on all types of vehicles they make. They also have recognized the strategic value in small mobil that can pull in first-time new mobil buyers.

The Verve concept is a sleek three-door hatchback with sculpted creases. Ford will show a second concept similar to the Verve at an auto show in China in November, and a third at the Detroit auto show in January. It plans to produce the vehicles for sale in Asia, Europe and North American between by 2008 or 2009.

Earlier this year, GM showed three concepts for subcompact mobil and Chrysler one of its own. Their concepts as well as the Verve would greatly enhance Detroit's presence in the subcompact class. Right now only GM competes in that segment with the Chevrolet Aveo. Toyota has the top seller in the Yaris. The company has sold 54,000 so far this year, up 66% over 2006.

Shots were fired at a police mobil when a BMW was stopped as part of a routine check in Gloucestershire.

The blue L-registered Series 3 BMW was parked in a lay-by on the B4008 by junction 12 of the M5 near Gloucester.

When the officers approached the mobil, outside a Blooms Garden Centre, it drove off onto the M5 and two shots were fired by a backseat passenger.

The M5 was closed in both directions between junctions 12 and 13, but had completely reopened by 1300 BST.

Congestion problems

Queues had formed as the Bank Holiday weekend got under way, and water was being handed out by police officers to the hundreds of stranded motorists.

The B4008, from junction 12 of the M5 towards Stonehouse, was also been closed and diversion signs are in place.

Police followed the BMW following the incident at about 0400 BST but lost sight of it just before junction 13, for Stroud.

Police are searching the area

"As the vehicle drove onto the mobilriageway, someone believed to be in the back of the vehicle then fired two shots in the direction of the police vehicle," said Kate Nelmes, of Gloucestershire Police.

"A lot of inquiries are being mobilried out to trace that vehicle and we would appeal to anyone who knows who is responsible and where they and the vehicle are now, to get in touch with us."

No-one was injured but officers are now mobilrying out a detailed investigation to find the mobil and its occupants.

A thorough search of the area is also being mobil ried out.
